Sweetpea came into foster care with Mark and I in mid June 2003. A very sad story. She had been turned into a shelter with a broken leg. Her family could not care for her break, so they brought her there. Her leg was pinned, casted and she was adopted out to a family soon after. Sadly, her leg was not healing properly, and the diagnosis was not good. Overtime it was decided that Sweets would come into the rescue program. The day we picked her up she went straight to the Vet (where we found out she was absolutely petrified of the hospital. Unable to even get a weight on her because of her complete panic & terror of just being near the stainless steel table) and it was decided that the leg condition was too far gone. It was in her best interest to remove the leg. It was scheduled for a few days later. The first few days were tough. She was in pain, frightened and in a strange home. We spent those days feeding her a fresh raw diet, trying to boost her immune system, and sleeping on the floor next to her Xpen. We became best friends very quickly. I was finding out what an incredible little dog this was ... little did we know just how incredible....

The surgery went very well. It was wonderful that we were able to bond so well before she went in, it was nice for her to have a friend with her. I was able to go in and was the last thing she saw and the first thing when she woke up. We had another late night visit and she was able to go home the next day!! The recovery was amazing. The day after surgery she was up and about, eating like a wild woman, enjoying chewies and in a wonderful mood. The bandages had to come off on day two. Uh Oh. Sweets is petrified of anything shiny in a persons hand. She was not happy about getting those bandages off. Finally we snuggled in a giant quilt and spent the next few hrs cutting the bandages off a little at a time. She so wanted to trust, but was just so scared. It came off and there was a great celebration with lots of snacks for Sweets :) She even did a little happy doggie dance! By the third day, she was out taking walks with me, enjoying the sunshine and summer weather. We would go out and read in the sunshine together enjoying life and second chances. Sweets was blossoming before us. She was happy and playful, she was so much happier and acted like she was incredibly grateful to have the pain and casted leg gone. She was a new girl!

The healing continued to be amazingly fast. This girl has a love of life and a heart of gold. She was not going to let this bump in the road keep her down. She loved being part of a pack of crazy hounds and she fit in perfectly. She loves to chase the hose, go in the doggie pool and run like the wind with the others. Below are just a few of the millions of photos we have taken of her enjoying her life to the fullest. All three were taken on July 18, 2003. Just a few weeks after surgery!!!!!

Sweets became best friends with our young girl Veruca. They did everything together, and acted as only sisters can. Bickering one minute and then giggling and being best friends the next. Judah treated her with a love and amazing compassion, as if she were one of her own pups. The three of them became a force to be reckoned with around the house. Look out boys!!!! Sweets is one tough cookie. She has overcome so much and has come so far. She has a passion for life and we all can learn a lot from this special little girl. She is my soulmate, Judah's adopted daughter, Veruca's long lost sister, and one of the most incredible little dogs I have ever met, After much soul searching, Mark and I broke our own strict rule. We adopted Sweets as our own. She is now a permanent Equus Hound at Camp Naughty Dog. There was no way I could move her again. She had been let down too many times. I do believe she was always meant to be a Naughty Dog. She just took a long and winding road home, touching lives along the way. Welcome Home Miss Sweets!
